Hockey heartbreaker

Men’s hockey opened their season with a heartbreaking loss on Wednesday. The team traveled to RMC to face the Paladins with head coach Kirk Muller behind the bench in a pin-stripe suit rather than his more familiar pads and skates. The Gaels lost 2-1 to their hometown rivals.

Ultimate perfect but without title

Last weekend the men’s ultimate team traveled to Montreal hoping to become national champions for the second consecutive year. The men entered the tournament ranked number one in the nation, with a perfect 7-0 record on the season. However, due to the weather conditions at this year’s Canadian University Ultimate Championship, the team finished their season undefeated but without the title.

World Series: Houston or Chicago?

The baseball season is a long journey, one that travels through the buds on the trees to green leaves to the browns and reds of autumn. But those who can control the journey are the ones who get the final champagne shower in October. This year, that team is going to be the Chicago White Sox, and I am going to tell you why.

Men’s volleyball brings home silver

The men’s volleyball team ended their pre-season with an impressive silver medal-winning performance at the Queen’s Invitational this past weekend. Playing against university squads from Windsor, New Brunswick, McMaster and Western, the men faced stiff competition over the course of the three-day tournament. On Friday, the team had a solid opener, dispatching McMaster 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 35-33).

Soccer struggles in penultimate weekend

With the playoffs on the horizon, Golden Gaels men’s and women’s soccer suffered this past Sunday against the visiting Carleton Ravens. The men’s side fell to Carleton 1-0, while the women settled for a 2-2 draw.

The Journal Athletes of the Week

Michelle Fortner led women’s field hockey to another strong showing with four goals in three games last weekend. She scored two goals against the Western Mustangs and one against the Carleton Ravens in a pair of wins on Saturday, and then the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to York on Sunday.
