Martin, Hogsden headline awards

For one day only last weekend, the Ambassador Hotel became the home of the Queen’s Golden Gaels. On Sunday the Queen’s athletic community came together to celebrate the year’s accomplishments and to recognize those people who made exceptional contributions to the Gaels’ success. Beneath the OUA banners brought home by the figure skating and volleyball teams, and to choruses of the Oil Thigh, Queen’s honoured the best and brightest of its student athletes.

The Golden Gaels final report card

Our process in grading the winter performances of Queen’s Interuniversity teams was highly unscientific. It is based quite simply on our perceptions of how each team performed, both in the regular season and playoffs, relative to their projected performances. The impressive results and high calibre of our teams made the grading process difficult. Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches and administrators who worked so hard to bring the University results to be proud of.

Over the years—from the Skydome, through Walt Williams’ high-socks, around Oliver Miller’s waistline, behind Charles Oakley’s fist, under Hakeem Olajuwan’s crutches and through Rafer Alston’s tears—I’ve become a bit of a diehard, an unapologetic, biased to blindness, a physically and emotionally involved fanatic.
