Losing streak ends with win at York

The football team ended its four-game losing streak with a 16-14 overtime win against the York Lions in Toronto last Saturday. With the team’s playoff hopes on the line going into the match-up, defensive co-ordinator Pat Tracey said consistency and simplicity were key components of the Gaels’ game plan.

Hockey splits doubleheader

The women’s hockey team split a pair of games against Western to open their season in London last weekend. The Gaels lost their league opener 2-1 despite holding a 1-0 lead going into the third period and outshooting the Mustangs 18- 7 in the final frame.

Lacrosse squeaks by Carleton

The men’s lacrosse team fought back from a seven-goal deficit to win 17-16 in overtime against Carleton last Sunday. The win is the first for the Gaels, who needed the victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Fencers on form at home

Over 280 fencers competed in the 30th annual Queen’s Invitational Fencing Tournament, held Oct. 14-15. Queen’s top results came in the foil competition. Nicole See-Too earned a fifth-place finish in a field of 49 fencers in the women’s foil and Ashley Chin placed 16th in the same event. Ryan Nelson placed seventh out of 56 entrants in the men’s foil.

Athletes of the Week

As a goaltender, Erin Bickerton’s role is typically to guard the defensive end of the pool. Last weekend, however, she proved she is also a threat on the offensive end. Bickerton, PhysEd ’08, scored the game-winning goal for the Gaels’ water polo team in a 9-8 victory over the Carleton Ravens last Sunday in Ottawa.
