Golden Gaels stun McMaster

In what was arguably the most exciting game of the season, the team came back from an 11-point deficit to upset the McMaster Marauders 25-19 on a miserable Saturday afternoon at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton. It was the first time in seven years that the Gaels beat the Marauders. Running back Mike Giffin said his team’s record against the Marauders didn’t factor into their preparations. “The mentality is always the same,” he said. Rushing for 73 yards on 23 carries and scoring two touchdowns, Giffin reassured his coaches that the decision to start him at running back was the right thing to do. But he refused to take credit for any of it.

On a wet and windy Saturday afternoon at the OUA cross-country championships at Fort Henry Hill at RMC, the Queen’s men upset both the second and fourth nationally ranked teams en route to a third-place finish thanks mostly to a gold-medal performance by Braden Novakowski. The women finished fourth overall, upsetting the seventh-ranked Windsor Lancers. Queen’s wasn’t seeded in the top ten in the CIS for men or women.

Soccer boots it to semifinals

The Queen’s men’s and women’s soccer teams battled drenching rain and tough opposition at Richardson Stadium on Saturday but both came through their quarter-final matches still standing and emboldened going into this weekend’s OUA Final Fours. The men’s squad, seeded first in the OUA East, took on the fifth-seeded Trent Excalibur.

Lacrosse loses to Laurier

The women’s lacrosse team ended a golden season with their second straight OUA silver medal, losing 7-5 to the defending champion Laurier Golden Hawks last Sunday in Waterloo. The women fought hard throughout, even tying up the game at one point but numerous fouls gave Laurier the advantage. The Gaels faced the University of Toronto last Saturday in Waterloo, coming through the semi-finals with an 8-7 win over the Varsity Blues.

Mustangs gallop over rugby Gaels

The Queen’s men’s rugby team fell short in its quest for an OUA title with a 15-10 loss to the Western Mustangs in London on Sunday. The Gaels had advanced to the OUA semi-finals with a 31-5 quarter-final victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks at Kingston field on Wednesday.

Field hockey wins bronze

After a shootout loss to Toronto in the OUA semi-finals the women’s field hockey team earned a bronze medal with a win over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday. The Gaels started and finished their playoffs with three games in three days.
