Rugby romps to win over Western
Backed by a crowd of cheering fans and determined to prove that last week’s loss to Brock was just a blip on the radar, the men’s rugby team beat the University of Western Ontario 16-13. Saturday’s game was a heated one; Queen’s hadn’t beaten Western since the 2001 OUA final.

Football flattens Waterloo
A raucous Homecoming game crowd of 10,452 braved the cold weather to witness the Golden Gaels football team put on a show. The Gaels demolished the Waterloo Warriors 45-0 while limiting them to only 54 yards on offence in a defensive masterpiece. Gaels running back Mike Giffin ran for 193 yards and cemented his name among the top rushers in Queen’s history with his seventh game of the season with more than 100 rushing yards, a new Queen’s record. He also eclipsed the all-time single-season rushing record of 937 yards set by Brad Elberg in 1992.

Recurring results for women’s hockey team
It was déjà vu for the women’s hockey team this weekend as they took on the Western Mustangs and the Windsor Lancers. The Gaels repeated the tie and loss they suffered against the same teams on the previous weekend. Head coach Rob Lalonde said the team needs to work on their fundamentals.

Soccer wins and ties
The Gaels’ soccer teams had a roller-coaster weekend. The women’s squad turned in a lacklustre performance Friday afternoon in a 1-1 tie against the Royal Military College Paladins but rebounded Sunday with a 5-0 defeat of the Trent Excalibur. The men’s team started the weekend well with a 4-2 victory over RMC but was held to a 0-0 draw with Trent on Sunday.

The women’s cross country team, ranked sixth in the country, won the Queen’s Invitational Saturday afternoon at Fort Henry. Leslie Sexton led the Gaels to victory by winning the five-kilometre race. Nadia Tatlow came in fourth for Queen’s, and fellow Gaels Liz Miller, Chelsey Wyrostok and Leah Larocque finished 10th through 12th.
