Strong opener for volleyball
The men’s volleyball team began their OUA title defence this weekend with a pair of close wins over the Laurier Golden Hawks and the Waterloo Warriors. On Friday night, Bartlett Gym was packed with enthusiastic Queen’s fans who came to see the team’s home opener against the Golden Hawks. It was a patchwork Gaels’ lineup, as the team was missing key players—outside hitter Dan McCrae and libero Stu Hamilton—due to injuries. Rookie Joren Zeeman filled McCrae’s slot, while third-year outside hitter Pete Galbraith came in to take Hamilton’s place at libero.

Football defeats Toronto
Anything other than the CIS-record 49th straight loss for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in their last game of the season would have been shocking. Nonetheless, the 54-24 Queen’s win packed its fair share of surprises. Opting to play starting quarterback Danny Brannagan, running back Mike Giffin and slotback Rob Bagg for the majority of the game rather than conserve them for the playoffs, Queen’s head coach Pat Sheahan saw all three come out with outstanding performances.

Heartbreak for men’s hockey team
The Queen’s men’s hockey team took one of a possible four points this past weekend thanks to a 4-0 Friday loss to the Brock Badgers and a heartbreaking 3-2 shootout loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday at the Memorial Centre. The Brock game started out close, with no score through the first period.

The upstart Colorado Rockies have had to enlarge their bandwagon considerably after their undefeated playoff march to the final. But there are quite a few reasons why Colorado is simply no match for the Sox.

The sun shone for the Golden Gaels women’s soccer team this weekend as they enjoyed a 2-0 victory over the Carleton Ravens, while the bad weather came in time for the men’s team to lose to the Ravens 2-0 on Saturday.

Split for women’s hockey
The Queen’s women’s hockey team split the weekend with a 2-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday and a 5-2 win over the Brock Badgers on Sunday. On Saturday, Guelph opened the scoring on a goal by forward Sarah McClinchey. Queen’s goaltender Katie Boyd managed to keep the score 1-0 when the Gaels’ Amanda Morra took a hooking penalty.
