Rugby triumphs over Trent

The Golden Gaels men’s rugby team sent a clear message to the their next opponent on Saturday afternoon with an authoritative 99-0 OUA quarter-final victory over the Trent Excalibur.

Gaels fall

It wasn’t supposed to end this way. On the heels of their best regular season since 2003 and primed for a long playoff run, the Gaels dropped their OUA quarter-final to the visiting Western Mustangs 27-19 on Saturday. The loss eliminated Queen’s from the playoffs and Western advances to face the University of Ottawa next weekend.

Soccer advances to final four

Amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Toronto, the third-seeded men’s soccer team overcame an early goal deficit to secure a 2-1 win over the second-seeded University of Toronto Varsity Blues in Saturday’s OUA quarter-final match.

Men’s volleyball team moves to 3-0

Despite a raucous home crowd, the men’s volleyball team came away from the Royal Military College Friday night with a victory in three straight sets over the RMC Paladins. The Paladins’ supporters came equipped to intimidate the Gaels with an array of cowbells, airhorns, chants and other noisemakers, but their efforts were in vain as Queen’s prevailed 25-16, 29-27 and 27-25.

Sports In Brief

The men’s basketball team won all three of their games to win the pre-season Western Invitational this past weekend. They beat the McGill Redmen 62-52 Friday and beat the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 83-56 Saturday, setting up a title match with the host Western Mustangs on Sunday. Tournament MVP Simon Mitchell led the team with 17 points, and the Gaels overcame a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win 87-82. The men’s next pre-season game will be Saturday in Canton, New York, against St. Lawrence University.
