Gaels grind Mustangs’ gears

The men’s rugby team is headed to the OUA finals tomorrow after a thrilling 18-13 win over the rival Western Mustangs on Saturday.

Soccer comes up short in semifinal

The men’s soccer team experienced both the heights of glory and the agony of defeat during the OUA Final Four tournament last weekend at Carleton University. They suffered a 1-0 loss to the eventual Ontario champion York Lions in Saturday’s semifinal, which denied the Gaels a berth in the national championships. But they recovered in stellar fashion the next day, beating the host Carleton Ravens—the top-ranked team in the country heading into the weekend—in the third-place game.

Women rowers tops in Canada

The Queen’s rowing team made history at the Canadian University Rowing Championships in Welland, Ontario last week. The women’s crew prevailed to win the team’s first national title, while the men also had their best performance to date with a second-place finish.

Athletes of the Week

The men’s rugby team defeated the Western Mustangs last Saturday, earning the Gaels a place in this weekend’s gold medal match against the Brock Badgers. Contributing to the team’s recent victories was scrum-half Bryn Davies, the OUA playoffs’ leading scorer who was recognized as one of the OUA’s Peak Performers for the week ending Nov. 4.

Volleyball streaks end

The men’s volleyball team sullied their undefeated season with a split this weekend, falling 3-2 to the Western Mustangs on Friday before defeating Windsor in four sets on Saturday. The Mustangs defeated the Gaels at the Ryerson Invitational Tournament last year. Queen’s started the match well.They were up two sets to one going into the fourth set, but surrendered the final two 25-21 and 15-10.

Hawks prey on Gaels

The women’s hockey team split their weekend in Waterloo, losing 7-2 against former OUA champions Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday and winning 4-1 against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday.

Hockey turns season around

The men’s hockey team got their season back on track this weekend with a pair of home wins. The Gaels beat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 4-2 in Napanee Friday and garnered a 4-3 win over the Ryerson University Rams at Kingston’s Memorial Centre Saturday.

Gaels thump Paladins in women’s opener

The Gaels continued a winning tradition Friday night at Bartlett Gym as the women’s basketball team began their regular season with an 88-54 defeat of the Royal Military College Paladins. It was the seventh straight win for Queen’s in the seven times they’ve played against RMC since the Paladins joined the league in 2003.

Sports In Brief

The football team was ousted by Western in their quarterfinal game Oct. 27, but they’re still receiving accolades for their strong regular season. Twelve Golden Gaels were named to the OUA’s all-star team on Tuesday, the most of any team. Six of the Gaels were first-team selections, including running back Mike Giffin, who was the OUA’s leading rusher with 1,157 yards and 12 touchdowns.
