A bitter pill from McGill

Despite strong Gaels support from a raucous, season-high crowd of 622 at the Memorial Centre, the McGill Redmen beat the men’s hockey team 6-2 Saturday.

Gaels flying high

The men’s volleyball team won in straight sets for the second time this season Saturday night, recording a 25-23, 25-21, 26-24 victory over the Ryerson Rams at Bartlett Gym. Head coach Brenda Willis said she was pleased with the team’s performance after falling behind in the third set.

Tough road trip for Gaels

A disappointing weekend on the road for the Queen’s women’s hockey team resulted in the Gaels earning one out of a possible four points. On Saturday afternoon the Gaels blew a three-goal lead to tie the Waterloo Warriors 3-3. The following day Queen’s gave up another lead against the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks and lost 2-1.

Basketball earns split

The men’s and women’s basketball teams both split their away games last weekend. In London on Friday, the men beat the Western Mustangs 82-71 while the women lost 60-49. On Saturday, the teams continued on to Windsor where the men lost 71-61 to the Lancers while the women won 69-65.

Will the New England Patriots finish their season undefeated?

The New England Patriots have emerged as the class of the National Football League this season. They have a 10-0 record and, other than the Indianapolis Colts, have beaten every team they’ve played by at least 14 points. Thanks to the Patriots, the most interesting question that has emerged out of this NFL season is: who can stop them?

Team sails into ninth

Many Queen’s varsity teams have accomplished great things so far this term, but none have travelled as far as the sailing team. Ten sailing team members sacrificed two-and-a-half weeks of classes and put in weeks of training to represent Canada at the Student Yachting World Cup. The regatta took place from Oct. 27 to Nov. 3 in La Rochelle, France.

Athletes of the week

Forward Mitch Leger was a driving force for the men’s basketball team on their weekend road trip in southwestern Ontario. Leger led the team to a win against the Western Mustangs by scoring 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. He followed that up the next night with 11 points and 11 rebounds in a hard-fought loss to the Windsor Lancers, the OUA defending champions.

Sports in brief

Gaels’ running back Mike Giffin was named to the first-team All-Canadian football team Wednesday. Giffin was the first running back in Queen’s history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season, and set school records with 16 touchdowns and 96 points. He finished tied for second in Canada with 12 rushing touchdowns. Receiver Rob Bagg, offensive lineman Cody Kennedy and defensive lineman Osie Ukwuoma were all given second-team honours.
