Born to run

Gaels’ running back Mike Giffin tries to evade three Western defenders Saturday in Queen’s 43-16 Homecoming win. Please see article "New gridiron stars shining for Gaels" in the Sports section for a column on the game. (Justin Tang)

No more election leaves of absence

Members of the AMS are no longer allowed to pick political favourites as the result of a motion passed at AMS General Assembly on Sept. 19. The new policy prohibits the society’s council and officers from publicly supporting an individual candidacy and from taking a leave of absence in order to campaign for a particular team.

University, city fall short of Homecoming goals

2008 appears to be a watershed year in the short history of the Homecoming Aberdeen Street party. At a press conference at City Hall Monday afternoon, Queen’s University and city officials expressed the need for a change in approach to dealing with the event.

Sustainability at Queen’s ups its grade

Queen’s is greener than ever, according to a recent report by the Sustainable Endowments Institute. The New College Sustainability Report Card, released annually from the Sustainable Endowments Institute, compares the environmental sustainability of universities across North America.

Sports In Brief

Queen’s own spin doctor

In the throes of two major elections, it can be tough to detect which politicians are genuine and which are spinning tall tales.

Token outrage falls short

Last week, the Queen’s University Muslim Students Association (QUMSA) reported anti-Islamic crimes on campus.

Students require moral education

Last week, the Dean of Arts and Science asked professors to read to their classes a letter expressing his deep concern about the offensive conduct of “a small group of students,” citing financial damage due to donors’ disgust, damage to additional government funding due to the negative image of the University and potential personal damage since those convicted on criminal charges face a criminal record and “culpable students face non-academic disciplinary charges from the University”—a joke since discipline is not in the hands of the University but of many of the perpetrators themselves.

A touch of Midas

Rain, purple and otherwise, did nothing to mar the events of Queen’s most infamous event.

Tip-toeing across the void

Edward Burtynsky will tell you that we’ve moved into a planetary crisis. He may also say the federal sustainability discussion in North America is “maddening,” the rapid and destructive industrialization of China is “dire,” the Conservative government is destroying our reputation in Europe as well as our ability to produce culture and that electing John McCain to the White House would be, for the devastation of our environment, like saying “forget the brake pedal and slam on the gas a little harder.”

New gridiron stars shining for Gaels

Going into Saturday’s Homecoming football game against Western, much of the hype centred on the Gaels’ offence, and perhaps rightly so.
