Anthem editorial misses spirit of the song

Dear Editors,

Re: “Re-evaluate the anthem” (Journal, Feb. 2, 2009)

I just wanted to thank the Journal for informing Queen’s readers of the ugly side of Canada’s national anthem. It is most certainly a neo-Christian, colonial song of oppression, capable of brainwashing children with an evil agenda of fervent nationalism. We citizens can only hope, as you suggest, that the government modifies the lyrics to reflect that the very existence of our nation was the result of an inglorious heist. How could such a socially and politically divisive song ever have received parliamentary approval in 1980?

Such ridiculous tirades demonstrate a complete ignorance of history and a spirit of insane, self-righteous political-correctness that has gripped the Journal as of late. The fact that our bilingual national anthem, originally penned by a French Canadian, was recently sung in Cree at a hockey game speaks to the spirit of the song.

Option A or B?

Dear Editors,

Re: “Next step for Queen’s Centre” (Journal, Feb. 9, 2009)

I will be supporting a plan that sees the completion of the Queen’s Centre with the least construction disruption and impact on a) student life and athletic programming; b) the physical navigation of the campus by faculty, staff, students, and community members and c) the operating budget.
