The men’s curling team ended fourth in the province last year. (Tyler Ball)

Sweeping the competition

As I put on men’s curling captain Chadd Vandermade’s shoes Tuesday night, he explains to me why most of the team has curled for more than 10 years. “It’s not really something you can pick up right away,” he said. “There are a lot of skills you don’t use in other sports.”

point/counterpoint

There are too many hits to the head in the National Hockey League, and they have to stop. Don’t get me wrong—I love a good, clean body check almost as much as a beautiful goal. A crushing open-ice hit can change a game’s momentum in an instant.

Bright beginnings for men’s volleyball

The men’s volleyball team aced their season-opening weekend with a pair of wins. The Gaels are 2-0 after a 3-1 win on Saturday over the Guelph Gryphons and a straight-sets victory on Sunday over the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks.

Laying the season’s first spike

The women’s volleyball team opened their season last weekend in Thunder Bay, where they played a doubleheader against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday and Sunday. The Gaels won their season opener on Saturday 3-1 and repeated that scoreline on Sunday afternoon.

Female Athlete of the Week

Fourth-year defender Martha Ross had a strong weekend for the women’s lacrosse team, netting eight goals to help the team secure third place in the OUA standings. Ross tallied one goal in an 8-7 loss to the Western Mustangs on Saturday before scoring a hat-trick in a 13-4 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday morning and then added another four goals against McGill University in a 17-9 victory later in the day.

Male Athlete of the Week

First-year forward Joey Derochie burst on to the OUA hockey scene this weekend by scoring two goals and adding two assists in the men’s hockey team’s 5-3 win over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday. With five points in four games Derochie is tied with Jordan Mirwaldt for the team lead.

Sports in Brief

The men's and women's rowing teams travelled to St. Catharines on Saturday to compete in the OUA championships. The teams had high hopes for a repeat of last year's double-victory, but both finished in 3rd place.
