Yo, is this The Wizard of Oz?

Most people who know me are blatantly aware that I love to complain. There’s nothing I love more than a well-timed jab at others expense or bringing someone down a peg. That being said, I wish I could continue this article by filling it with the occasional pun or hilarious critique about how the liquor was the best part of my evening with at the Queen’s Players show Miley…why so Cyrus??—but I can’t.

A sobering surprise

As a fourth-year student, I’ve been to my fair share of Queen’s Players shows. However, I’ve never been to a Queen’s Players show sober—I doubt many people have. Although it may sound awful, being sober at a Players show is a surprisingly enlightening experience.

Digging for the sky

It’s a terrifying prospect to interview a band for your first Journal article. That terror is only heightened when that band has received critical acclaim for their 10 CDs, been likened to R.E.M. and have been touring across Canada. Skydiggers founding member Josh Finlayson is the exact opposite of a cocky rock star. When I talked to him, he described his career as very humbling and said he yearns to keep working and all the while a dog barks in the background.

Tell me a story

“Everyone of them is somebody’s child.” The man on the screen tells us that his grandmother used to tell him this refrain when he, himself, was a child. As an adult, he seems to have accepted this mantra into his life. The man behind the camera, Peter Kingstone, hopes we will as well.
