Gaels prepare to host Laval Rouge-et-Or

Celebrations surrounding the Gaels’ Yates Cup victory over the Western Mustangs last weekend have died down as their playoff campaign continues tomorrow afternoon. L’Université Laval Rouge-et-Or are heading westward from Quebec City to Richardson Stadium for a Mitchell Bowl meeting with the football team. The winner earns a trip to next weekend’s Vanier Cup at Laval.

Soccer finishes fourth in Canada

The women’s soccer team brought their thrilling season to an end with a fourth-place finish last weekend at the CIS championships in Toronto. After beating the Atlantic champion St. Francis Xavier X-Women in the quarter-final, the Gaels lost a heartbreaker to the eventual champions, the Trinity Western Spartans from Langley, B.C., in the semifinals.

Cross country hosts CIS finals

Last Saturday afternoon Queen’s hosted the CIS cross-country national championships on Fort Henry Hill. Despite the intermittent drizzle, conditions proved to be highly conducive to racing with many Queen’s competitors attaining personal best times. The women’s five-kilometre race was first, with Queen’s finishing 10th out of 19 teams. Leah Larocque led the Gaels. Her 18:23.6 finish landed her 33 out of 131 competitors.

Queen’s finally wins its rugby crown

Two years ago, the men’s rugby team only lost one game all season but fell to the Brock Badgers in the OUA Final. Last season, they finished their season at 5-0-1 and lost in the finals to the McMaster Marauders. This year, the Gaels won all 10 games they played, going a perfect 8-0 during the regular season before winning their first Turner Trophy since 2001 with a win over the Western Mustangs last Saturday.

Male Athlete of the Week

Finding his team in an all too familiar spot, Chris Barrett, third year wing on the men’s rugby team, wouldn’t let history repeat itself. Over the past two seasons, Barrett had seen his team come up short in the finals twice, and would not let his team fall for a third straight year.

Female Athlete of the Week

Last weekend, fourth-year post Erin Skippon recorded two solid performances, leading her team to victory against the Waterloo Warriors and the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks. Against Waterloo, she scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Against Laurier she recorded 22 points and added nine rebounds.

Sports in brief

Queen’s swimmers only collected 633.5 points against stiff competition in Guelph this past weekend, finishing behind the McMaster Marauders, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, the Guelph Gryphons and the Laurentian Lakers. The women’s team placed fifth and the men finished at fourth.

Hands-on policy

The student section at Richardson Stadium fills slower than the section opposite it. There’s an explanatory theory alternative to assumptions that pre-game pancake-keggers are the reason. It implicates the pre-game frisk as the cause. AMS Hospitality and Safety Director Ellen Allwright said Student Constables have jurisdiction on the student side of the stadium during games that are projected to draw high-volume attendance.

Queen's upsets Laval for berth in Vanier Cup

The No. 1-ranked L’Université Laval Rouge-et-Or entered today’s game as the defending Vanier Cup champions. The Gaels’ 33-30 victory secured a trip to Quebec City to compete for their first national title in 17 years.
