Vanier Cup champs

As the Queen’s football team headed to the dressing room down 18 points after the first half of the 45th Vanier Cup, it looked as though their improbable playoff run was finally coming to an end.

Gaels vie for top prize against Dinos

The Queen’s football season has lasted as long as it possibly could have. The Gaels left on Tuesday for Quebec City. On Saturday they’ll play the University of Calgary Dinos in the Vanier Cup at PEPS Stadium—the home field of the Laval Rouge-et-Or.

All aboard Queen’s ARC

Queen’s new Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) will have a soft opening on Dec. 1, Athletics and Recreation Associate Director of Facilities and Business Development Herb Steacy said. New equipment will be installed in the ARC this weekend in preparation for the opening, which will see some gym facilities open for use at 6 a.m on Tuesday.

Agreeing to greening

Yesterday, Queen’s joined 18 other universities in signing the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) climate change agreement. Titled Ontario Universities: Committed to a Greener World, the document was endorsed by all COU member institutions and outlines the commitment to make each university’s operations more sustainable.

Clinic opens Monday

Queen’s will open a flu vaccine clinic on Monday to all students and faculty members. The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Grant Hall. Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Public Health physician Dr. Kieran Moore said the University will receive about 2,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine.

Access denied

Auditors will complete an accessibility scan of Queen’s today to bring the University up to provincial standards by January 2010. The province, which mandated accessibility improvements by 2010, aims to have accessibility for all Ontarians by 2025.

Balance salt and sensibility

Many Canadian food manufacturers who are under political pressure to reduce the salt content of their products believe Canadian consumers are to blame for the prevalence of salty foods, the Globe and Mail reported Nov. 19.

Coping with climate change

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen runs from Dec. 7 to 18, but we’re already beginning to hear the excuse parade from assorted world leaders skeptical that anything substantive will emerge from the meeting. Since the last UN climate conference in Kyoto in 1997, climate change has evolved from a social and environmental issue into one universally recognized as having massive global security implications due to its impact on food supplies and drought caused by global warming.

Clearing a path to the final

Offensive linemen might play the least-heralded position in football. Other offensive players get to handle the ball. Defensive linemen have the glory of sacking the quarterback once in awhile and defensive backs have the allure of potentially intercepting the ball.

To market, to market

After having the pleasure of reading Christina Rossetti’s Victorian poem “Goblin Market” for two English classes during my time at Queen’s, the chance to see a dramatic interpretation of the familiar piece was a welcome change of pace.

Standing room only for Vanier

Since the early 1960s, the Vanier Cup has been held in a neutral location. It was held at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium until 1988 before moving down the street to the SkyDome. It has also been held in Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium.

Storytelling Foer grown-ups

The eating of animals isn’t a new subject, nor is it a subject suddenly illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer’s latest book, appropriately titled Eating Animals. What’s new is the malleability with which Foer approaches the facts of the farming practice, which steer away from the typically mundane animal-rights rhetoric into a compelling non-fiction piece.
