People on social media seem to love decadent spreads. From Nutella to cookie butter, last year thousands of recipes appeared on pages like Tasty and Tastemade using these popular treats.

Unfortunately, you can’t live on Nutella alone. If you’re looking for a healthy DIY alternative that makes a great gift, apple butter tastes like apple pie in a jar. As a perk, the recipe leaves your house smelling like cinnamon. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it can be slathered on toast or paired with pork — this is a truly multi-talented spread.

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium apples
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • ¼ cup of brown or cane sugar

Instructions:

1. Peel and core the apples

2. Dice the apple

3. Put all ingredients in a large saucepan and stir, adding nutmeg or other spices to your preference

4. Heat on high until it reaches a boil

5. Turn heat down to low

6. Let simmer for 45 minutes

7. Let cool

8. Put in food processer to combine ingredients

9. Enjoy!
