Big games include a U SPORTS Championship, Carr-Harris Cup, and the Cure Cancer Classic.

As we kick off a new year and new term, university sports are finally back. Here are a few dates Gaels fans will want to mark on their calendars.

Carr-Harris Cup (Feb. 8)

With the rivalry between the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins and Gaels dubbed the longest hockey rivalry in the world, the Carr-Harris Challenge Cup is a hockey tradition dating back to 1886. The Carr-Harris Cup is back for the 2024 season as the Gaels take on the RMC Paladins on Feb. 8.

With ticket details set to be released soon, hockey fans in the Kingston area will be sure to see an exciting physical game between the cross-town rivals.

In previous games this season, the Gaels dominated RMC with 5-1 and 8-3 victories in the span of three days.

Unlike last term’s games, the Carr-Harris cup won’t be played on home ice for either team, but at the Leon’s Centre (soon to be Slush Puppie Place) to offer an even more exciting atmosphere for players and fans alike.

The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m., but the Gaels and Paladins will face-off once more before the Cup at a Queen’s home game scheduled for Jan. 13.

Cure Cancer Classic Commerce vs. Engineering Rivalry Game (March  14)

With one of the best turnouts of the year, the Cure Cancer Classic (CCC) Commerce vs Engineering Hockey game is set to hit the Leon’s Centre on March 14.

With no ticket details yet, fans of the CCC can witness the Commerce Classic bring together business students from across Canada in a precursor tournament on Jan. 19 and 20.

The CCC, including the Commerce Classic tournament, raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Last year, the Commerce Classic raised a successful $78,341. This year, the tournament will take place at the INVISTA Centre in Kingston’s west end, on Jan. 19 and 20.

U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championships (March 14-17)

Serving up some excitement this season will be the Men’s Volleyball team, as Queen’s hosts the 2024 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship.

The tournament-style championship will take place between March 14 and 17 in the ARC, with more information to be released.

Current U SPORTS rankings see Université de Sherbrooke, University of Alberta, and Queen’s in the top three spots, followed by the University of Saskatchewan and University of Winnipeg in fourth and fifth places.

Between now and March, we can expect to see shifts in the leaderboard, and these could be a preview of who we see on the Queen’s championship court.
