Letters to Editors

Lest we forget

Dear Editors,

My Grandfather endured the horrors of World War II. Wishing to honour his sacrifice, I wanted to join a Remembrance Day ceremony at Queen’s. However, in turning to the Internet to find information, Google failed to turn up any leads and both the AMS and Queen’s’ homepages didn’t provide details on any scheduled event. To be fair though, an e-mail was later sent out by the AMS—at 12:13 a.m.—the Remembrance Day morning. I didn’t check my e-mail until noon, after the event was over.

I was irate I couldn’t join my fellow students and colleagues in the ceremony.

Since we’re fond of traditions here, let’s start a new one of giving Remembrance Day the respect it deserves. I suggest the tradition begins with an e-mail sent out by the AMS, at least three days in advance to provide ample notice. The last-minute notification of the ceremony shares the same lack of preparation and thought as a late assignment and is entirely disrespectful to our veterans and troops overseas, undermining the sacrifices they have made and are still making for Canada.

In order that proper homage and respect be given on Remembrance Day, let’s ensure notices are posted in more visible locations including website front pages and public notice boards in sufficient time next year.

Mark Ouseley,
