Women’s hockey close against CIS champs

Playing the first-ranked team in the country is no way to end a team’s losing ways. The Queen’s Golden Gaels women’s hockey team learned that lesson Saturday night as they fell to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 2-1.Continue...

Men’s hockey continues to stumble

Heading into the weekend, Queen’s hockey was looking to rebound after their nail-biting 2-1 loss to the U of T Varsity Blues on Jan. 14. Friday night’s affair was a rematch, and the Gaels knew better what Toronto’s strengths and weaknesses were. They hoped not only to come out with a victory, but also to move ahead of RMC in the standings and into first place in their division.Continue...

Journal Athletes of the Week

Calla Humphries ran away from the competition and into the Queen’s record books at the St. Lawrence Open on Jan. 14. The fourth-year Phys Ed student won a gold medal in the 500-metre event, adding to the plethora of medals won by the track team at the Open. Her time of 1:16:72 is not only her best ever —it is also a new Queen’s record.Continue...

After finishing the first half with a 7-5-1-0 record, the women’s hockey team was looking to start the second half of the season in London on a positive note. However, playing the opening weekend on the road, the Gaels knew they were up for a challenge to earn victories.

Leaving the best athletes behind?

When former men’s hockey assistant coach Tim Cunningham looks back on his 10-year stint at Queen’s, one of the things he remembers most is wishing he had more resources.

Under the Queen’s Athletics Funding structure, those salaries were part-time ones, and Cunningham said it was tough to build a strong hockey program and recruit players under the system.Continue...

Still the best game you can name, even on Sunday morning

If you should happen to wander into Jock Harty Arena at 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning this semester, you’ll see a group of people—most of them Queen’s students—playing hockey. Sometimes, when the temperature inside and outside the rink is just right, a fog hangs over the ice, lending an almost dream-like quality to the game.Continue...

Women topple Warriors

The women’s basketball team traveled to Waterloo last weekend hoping to build on a two-game winning streak.

On Friday the Gaels put forth a lackadaisical effort and fell to the Laurier Golden Hawks 59-48. Jaime Dale led the team in scoring with 15 points, and Claire Meadows was right behind her with a 14-point effort.Continue...

Five must be a lucky number for the men’s volleyball team. Proving that they can go the distance, the team chalked up its third and fourth five-set wins of the season this week. Remaining undefeated in five-setters this season, the Gaels took on the McMaster Marauders and Guelph Gryphons and emerged victorious in both contests.Continue...

The strange tale of Steve Downie

If Todd Bertuzzi’s dominating physical presence helps guide Canada to a gold medal in Turin next month, how will our nation react to his success? How, hypothetically, will we respond if he fires a game-winning goal past a Russian netminder in the gold-medal game to secure our Olympic bragging rights for the next four years?Continue...

The Golden Gaels midterm report card

Our process in grading the fall performances of Queen’s Interuniversity teams was highly unscientific. It is based quite simply on our perceptions of how each team performed, both in the regular season and playoffs, relative to their projected performances. The impressive results and high calibre of our teams made the grading process difficult. With a few more playoff wins, what follows might well have looked a lot like a Queen’s student’s high school report card. Congratulations to all the Queen’s athletes, coaches and administrators who worked so hard to bring our school results to be proud of.Continue...

Ravens falter

A good winning streak is one of those things that is never really appreciated until it’s over. For a while, it’s the only thing anyone can talk about.

Before long, the initial buzz has worn off. Victories continue to pile up, championships are won, and fans become wary of discussing the streak too openly—like not talking to a pitcher in the middle of a no-hitter for fear of jinxing him.Continue...

Silver for volleyball
