DEEPLY SHALLOW

The asinine world of Hollywood gossip

Big Brother

The houseguests on CBS’ floundering reality show Big Brother threatened to walk out of the show this week. Apparently, the six remaining “ordinary people in an extraordinary situation” were disappointed with the efforts of the producers to create friction in the harmonious house. The potential rebellion did not come to fruition, but had said producers scrambling for a contingency plan. In a related story, a tree fell in the forest and nobody heard or cared.

No T-Hanks

Actor Hank Azaria (The Simpsons, Godzilla) picked up an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries. He earned the statuette for his portrayal of a sportswriter who makes weekly visits to his aging and ailing mentor in Tuesdays with Morrie. Since his recent separation from wife Helen Hunt, Azaria is desperately seeking someone to spend Tuesdays with Hank.

Crazy Man

There has been a school of thought (for lack of a better term) in Hollywood that suggests that the creator of such ingenious comic characters as Opera Man, Cajun Man, and Bobby Boucher, Adam Sandler is poised for a creative breakthrough. The leaders of this movement are weirdo directors Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia); the latter has put his money where his mouth is. After honing his comedic skills (something that the author of this piece ought to consider) by spending some time writing for Saturday Night Live, Anderson has announced that he will write and direct a film that he believes will be Sandler’s bold step into maturity. This confirms that P.T. is, for the moment, wackier than his girlfriend, Fiona Apple.

Dating Private Ryan

It seems as though the drama surrounding that vixen Meg Ryan has died down. As you are almost certainly aware, the petite blonde who usually appears in heartwarming films that draw throngs of suburban housewives to the theatres was at the centre of a certifiably hot Hollywood love triangle. Ryan briefly left long time hubby Dennis Quaid for the inviting arms of Australian heartthrob Russell Crowe. However, once the sun set on the summer of ‘00, Meg was reunited with Dennis. The best part of this story was that there was no mention of Randy Quaid’s love life.
