Gaels drop two

Women’s volleyball winless in Waterloo

The Queen’s women’s volleyball team dropped both their games this weekend in Waterloo, falling to 5-12 on the season. The team lost Saturday afternoon 3-1 against the Waterloo Warriors, and fell again on Sunday evening 3-1 against the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Queen’s had some trouble in the first set Saturday afternoon, losing 25-15. They came back to win the second set 25-19, but Waterloo dominated the final two frames 25-19 and 25-15 for the win.

The Gaels were led by middle Christiane Taylor, who got 13 kills, and setter Jenna Willis, who put up 24 assists.

On Sunday evening, in a game rescheduled from Friday due to inclement weather that prevented teams from travelling, the Gaels fared no better, losing to the Hawks in four sets. Rookie Elyssa Heller recorded 16 kills on the effort and leads the Gaels with 164 on the season.

Head coach Joely Christian said the schedule change made it difficult for the Gaels to plan for each game.

“We prepared mentally for Laurier first, and then you’re trying to reshuffle and readjust,” she said. “I think it had some impact, for sure.”

The team travels to Thunder Bay next weekend for their final two regular season games against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

Queen’s holds the OUA East’s fourth and final playoff slot, but the 5-13 Ryerson Rams and 4-12 Lakehead aren’t far behind. If Queen’s wins both matches, they automatically qualify. If they lose both, they’re out of playoff contention.

Christian said the Gaels should make the playoffs.

“We’re a good team, we just haven’t pulled together enough consistent performances, so we’re where we are.”
