Queen’s on a roll at curling nationals

The Gaels men’s and women’s curling teams have found success thus far at the inaugural national curling championships, held in Waterloo this week. The women, fresh off a silver-medal performance at the OUA championships Feb.18, won their opening match in dramatic fashion Wednesday afternoon. They took two points in the last end to claim a 7-6 victory over the Regina Cougars but lost an 8-6 match to the Manitoba Bisons Wednesday night when Manitoba stole two points in the final end. The men opened with a 6-4 win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men Wednesday evening.

McGill golden in women’s hockey

The McGill Martlets women’s hockey team knocked off the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-0 Monday in Ottawa to claim the national championship. It was McGill’s first national title in a women’s sport. Laurier defeated Queen’s in the OUA semifinals, beat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues for the OUA championship and won their first two games at the CIS championships to earn a berth into the final. They came up short against the Martlets. The McGill Redmen, who defeated the Gaels’ men’s hockey team in the OUA quarter-finals, went on to beat the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes in the semifinals and the Brock Badgers for the Queen’s Cup, awarded annually to the OUA champions. They will represent Ontario in the CIS championships, which start March 20 in Moncton, N.B.

UBC wins third basketball title in five years

The University of British Colombia Thunderbirds women’s basketball team claimed their third national championship in the past five seasons Sunday in Saskatoon when they defeated the Regina Cougars 67-46. It marked the seventh straight championship for a team from B.C. and the 17th straight championship for the Canada West conference. Ontario was represented by the OUA champion McMaster Marauders, who beat the Laval Rouge Et Or 83-79 to claim the bronze medal, and the OUA silver medalist University of Toronto Varsity Blues, who finished tied for seventh.

UBC claims women’s volleyball title

The University of British Colombia Thunderbirds won their first women’s volleyball national championship in 30 years March 1 in New Brunswick. They recorded a five-set victory over the Université de Montréal Carabins to claim the Tantramar Trophy. The OUA champion McMaster Marauders were the lone Ontario representative at the tournament. They finished in sixth place. No Ontario team has won the championship since the Western Mustangs claimed the 1976 title.
