Forbes shines at Canadian Championship

Patrick Forbes, captain of the Golden Gaels’ men’s golf team, placed fourth at the Canadian University/College Championship last May in Victoria, B.C. He shot 286 for one over par. The Queen’s team shot a total of 912, eight strokes short of the fourth round cut. The Gaels finished 13th out of 20 overall.

With his top five finish, Forbes is in the running to represent Team Canada at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World Games, to be hosted in Sun City, South Africa this coming September. Should he make the Canadian team, it will be his second consecutive year representing his country. He golfed for Canada in the FISU World Games last year in Bangkok, Thailand.

Fencers to compete in national championships

Queen’s Fencing had four of its members selected by Fencing Canada to compete at the National Fencing Championships from June 26 to 29 in Montreal.

Kristina Han will compete in the senior women’s sabre, Joanna Ko will compete in senior women’s epee and Christian Petrozza will compete in the senior men’s foil. Katie Porter will be competing in the cadet, junior and senior women’s foil event.

OUA Coach of the Year, Dr. Hugh Munby, said that the selections meant a lot of positives in the future for Queen’s Fencing.

“In a word, recruiting” said Munby. “[The selections] are important, they give us visibility. There are high school fencing clubs around the country, with fencers thinking of coming to Queen’s. This gives them the knowledge that [succeeding at Queen’s fencing] is a real possibility.”

Coach Wilson selected as an Assistant for Team Canada

Golden Gaels Women’s basketball coach Dave Wilson has been selected as a coach for the Canadian Junior Women’s basketball team, in preparation of the upcoming FIBA U18 Americas Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina from July 23 to 27.

The Team Canada’s last success was a silver medal in the 2006 FIBA U18, but last year Canada placed ninth in Slovakia. In order to qualify for the FIBA U19 Women’s Championship in Bangkok, Team Canada will need to finish in the top four.
