Sailing claims McGill Cup

The Queen’s sailing team competed in three regattas over the weekend. They took home a decisive win in the McGill Cup in Montreal, with Ethan Holtzer and Seth Whitmore claiming the A Division title and Peter Soosalu and Nick Trottier claiming the B Division title with nine victories in their ten races. In the other regattas, team members Josh Brown, Stephanie Alp, Alex Erjavec and Madelyn Maingot finished 12th at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Fall Open and the team pulled off a seventh-place finish in the McMillan Cup, which uses 44-foot keelboats. The McMillan Cup finish qualified Queen’s for the Kennedy Cup, which takes place Nov. 7-9 and gives the winning school the chance to go to the Student Yachting World Cup.

Six women’s soccer players receive accolades at OUA awards

Six female Gaels soccer players were recognized by the OUA on Wednesday during the annual OUA awards. Defender Brienna Shaw was named the OUA Rookie of the Year and was also named to the 2008 first team all-stars for the OUA East.

Jen Hutchinson, Kelli Chamberlain, Angela Sullivan and keeper Katie McKenna were all named to the OUA East second team all-star team.

Queen’s season ended last weekend in Ottawa as they were beaten 1-0 in the OUA East semifinal.

Men’s basketball falls in Quebec

The men’s basketball team dropped both games at a preseason tournament hosted by the Université de Laval last weekend.

In the first game against Waterloo, despite a 16-point performance from Baris Ondul, the Gaels lost 92-62 to the Warriors.

In the second game, against the host Laval Rouge et Or, Queen’s couldn’t get the offense going as they fell 68-46.

The men will open their season this Sunday, when they host the Royal Military College Paladins at 8 p.m. in Bartlett Gym.

Women’s basketball drops two at Laval

The women’s basketball team had a poor end to their preseason as they dropped both games at a preseason tournament hosted by the Université de Laval last weekend.

On Saturday, the University of Ottawa GeeGees were involved in a low-scoring slog against the Gaels, but defeated them 47-36.

On Sunday, the host Laval Rouge et Or beat Queen’s 63-52.

The women start their season Saturday night at Barlett Gym when they host the Royal Military College Paladins at 6 p.m.

Zanetti named OUA All-Star

Fourth-year men’s soccer defender Michael Zanetti was named to the OUA East Second All-Star team Thursday. Zanetti played in 13 of the 14 Gaels’ games this year and provided a solid presence on the backline.

Triathlon comes out strong at Wolfe Island Duathlon

The Gaels’ triathlon team hosted the Wolfe Island Duathlon on Sunday, with participants from Western, Royal Military College, McGill and the University of Toronto.

In the rookie women’s category, Queen’s Meg Donevan, Sarah Thompson and Leigh Christopher took first, second and third places respectively, while Queen’s athletes took all of the top 8 finishing spots in the race.

In the rookie male category, Sean Bowen finished in a very close second, seconds behind winner Alex Espinosa of Western.

In the veteran female category, LolaJean Gentles finished third behind McGill’s first and second place finishers.
