Male Athlete of the Week

Morgan Jarvis – Rowing

Rower Morgan Jarvis could well be considered the perfect academic role model.

Jarvis started his rowing career in New Zealand before coming to Queen’s, where he completed an undergraduate degree in biology. This led him to do a Master’s degree in molecular medicine at Queen’s, before enrolling in Queen’s Law School.

Jarvis won gold in the Head of the Rideau regatta in Ottawa on Sept. 27 and the Head of Trent regatta in Peterborough Oct. 3. He represented the lightweight varsity men’s single at both events.

In Ottawa he shattered the course record with a time of 19 minutes and 35 seconds.

“You only set records if there is a tailwind,” he said. “A slight tailwind pushes the boat along, it was optimal conditions. I knew I was going to break the record as soon as I pushed off, as long as I didn’t crash.”

Jarvis won gold at Trent with a time of 17 minutes and 57.86 seconds, beating the competition’s top rowers and even some of the heavyweights.

“There were faster guys at Trent,” he said. “It was more satisfying beating the heavyweight guy by one second. It was a better indication of where I stand.”

Jarvis said juggling law school and rowing isn’t that bad. He took time off from rowing during his Master’s degree but found that his academic performance dropped.

“When you have more on your plate you tend to have to be more efficient with your time, you end up doing everything better,” he said. “An old teacher once told me that if you want the job done well, give it to a busy person.” Jarvis said a lot of his success lies in goal-setting, working with good rowers and keeping good company.

“The key to doing well is having a good environment, you know, good coaches, good people, people who commit as much time as you do. You can’t do anything without their help, along with the other athletes working with you.”
