Gaels claim second straight national title

The women’s soccer team is the first women’s team in Queen’s history to win back-to-back national titles.

The Gaels won the CIS championship in penalty kicks against the Montreal Carabins in front of a crowd of over 400 in Montreal.

The teams ended regulation time tied 0-0. After a scoreless overtime, the Carabins missed their first two penalty kicks. Gaels midfielder Riley Filion and defender Mikayla Kay put Queen’s up 2-0. The Carabins made their third shot.

The Gaels’ third shooter was graduating forward Kelli Chamberlain, the team’s captain. She netted her shot and the Carabins missed their fourth kick to hand Queen’s their second consecutive national title.

The Carabins were the only undefeated team in Canada this season. They beat the Gaels in pre-season play.

The Gaels had already won two post-season games on penalty kicks going into the CIS final.

Both Queen’s and Montreal had played CIS semifinals on Saturday and didn’t seem to feel a sense of urgency at the start of the game.

With minutes left in the first half, Kay was awarded a penalty kick but Carabins goalkeeper Martine Julien dove to knock the ball shy of the goal.

Striker Jackie Tessier, the team’s leading scorer, was dealing with bruised ankle and substituted in and out throughout the game. With eight minutes left in regulation, Tessier kicked a bouncing ball over Julien, but it hit the Carabins’ crossbar.

The Gaels beat the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in penalty kicks in the OUA final and the Ottawa Gee-Gees in penalty kicks in the CIS semifinal. After all of her crucial penalty kick saves, goalkeeper Chantel Marson was named tournament MVP for the CIS Championship.
