Women third in pre-season tourney

The defending OUA champion women’s volleyball team secured a bronze medal to open the 2012 season.

Queen’s placed third in the Ryerson Invitational pre-season tournament last weekend, topping the Windsor Lancers 3-1 in Sunday’s bronze-medal match.

The Gaels started fast against Windsor, overcoming several lead changes to claim the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22.

The Lancers battled back in third, winning the set 25-14, before Queen’s put an end to any hopes of a comeback with a 25-20 win in the fourth.

Rookies Shannon Neville and Brett Hagarty led the Gaels against Windsor with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.

The Gaels finished 3-2 overall at Ryerson, falling to Western and Humber College. Western went on to win the tournament, defeating the host Rams 3-2 in the championship game.

Queen’s will travel west next weekend for their second taste of pre-season action, kicking off the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge in Winnipeg on Sept. 27.

Cross country takes fourth at Western

The cross country team got an early taste of CIS nationals at Thames Valley Golf Course in London, ON, where the championship race will be held in mid-November.

The Queen’s team finished fourth place overall at the 38th annual Western invitational on Saturday.

The Guelph Gryphons were back to winning ways after finishing second overall to the Gaels on Sept. 15 at the Queen’s Invitational held at Fort Henry. The defending national champions took first overall at Western.

The Queen’s men’s team finished fourth in the team standings Saturday, behind Guelph, Windsor and Laval. Clay Patterson placed eighth, Tyson Loney ninth and Jeff Costen 11th.

The Gaels women placed sixth overall, with the help of a strong individual race from Julie-Anne Staelhi, who placed sixth. She placed sixth, while the other Queen’s runners placed 35th or higher.

The next cross country invitational is the Paul Short Run held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, on Sept. 28th.
