Even record at the break

Women’s basketball falls to no. 1 Windsor, beats Western

The Gaels are entering the break in similar fashion as last December. At 4-4, their OUA record hasn’t changed.

Sitting at the .500 mark after they split back-to-back games last weekend, Queen’s lost 72-64 to the Windsor Lancers on Friday and won 72-53 against the Western Mustangs.

“Going below .500 would have been hard to swallow,” said Gaels head coach Dave Wilson.

The Windsor result was an improvement from last year’s 83-53 loss.

The number-one ranked Lancers had difficulty prying away the Gaels through all four quarters and trailed at the half. The game was tied 51-51 when a 10-point run midway through the fourth quarter by the Lancers kept the Gaels at bay.

The Gaels were affected by a slew of injuries throughout the game. Among them was second–year guard Rachael Urosevic, who received a third-quarter blow to the head and was sidelined for the remainder of the weekend.

Third-year wing Gemma Bullard totaled 16 points,, while Windsor’s Jessica Clemencon shot 9 for 13, finishing with 21 points and eight rebounds.

“[Clemencon]’s recognized as the best player in the country and it’s quite obvious why,” Wilson said.

Against their rival Mustangs, the Gaels scored 23 points in the first quarter, holding them to only three points in the process. The Mustangs couldn’t overcome the early deficit.

The Gaels’ tight defense resulted in 18 turnovers by the Mustangs, 12 of which came from steals.

The Gaels shot 46.9 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from the three-point line. Post Sydney Kernahan and Bullard scored 16 points apiece, while wing Jenny Wright scored a team-high 17 points and made six steals. Guard Liz Boag distributed a season-high 11 assists.

The fourth-place Gaels will resume OUA play in January, with 12 games left to play.
