On Thursday morning, U Sports announced that Queen’s will be the site of the 2021 U Sports Basketball Championships. The event, which will be held at the ARC, is set to take place from March 11 to 14.

While the distinction of hosting will give Queen’s automatic entry into the championships, the Gaels have won their way into the tournament twice in the past four years. At last year’s U Sports Championships in Victoria, B.C., the women’s basketball team finished fourth.

The honour of hosting a national championship is nothing new to Queen’s, who hosted the 2017 women’s hockey championships and the 2015 women’s rugby championships.

The recent haul of national championships coming to Kingston has coincided with an impressive era for Queen’s athletics. This year alone, six of Queen’s 13 varsity teams have spent time in the U Sports top 10.

Currently, the women’s basketball team is trying to make its bid for this year’s U Sports Championships. With five games left in their schedule, the team sits second in the OUA East.
