Out of the 15 Medical Doctoral schools in Maclean’s 2019 university ranking, Queen’s came in at fifth place.
The University of Toronto and McGill University tied for the top spot, followed by UBC and McMaster, in the magazine’s rankings released last Thursday.
Maclean’s divides universities into three different categories to be ranked and evaluated separately: Medical Doctoral, Primarily Undergraduate, and Comprehensive. This division accounts for different types of institutions and availability of graduate and professional programs.
While Medical Doctoral universities offer PhD programs and boast a medical school, Comprehensive universities excel in the standing of their research at an undergraduate and graduate level.
The rankings are based on areas of evaluation including the institution’s reputation, resources, student experience, and faculty awards.
For the rankings, Maclean’s conducted student survey about life on campus. It also administered a reputational survey, which collected the opinions of university faculty, successful business figures, and high school guidance counsellors to determine a university’s reputation.
For the second year in a row, Queen’s ranked second in student satisfaction within the Medical Doctoral universities.
This overall score included Queen’s achieving first place in opportunities for extracurriculars, second place in residence living, third place in making Indigenous culture visible on campus, fourth place for mental health services, and fifth place for sexual assault prevention.
Queen’s was ranked sixth in reputation amongst Medical Doctoral universities, a step up from seventh place in 2018. In the National Reputational Rankings, encompassing Medical Doctoral, Comprehensive, and Primarily Undergraduate universities, Queen’s placed seventh.
“This year’s Maclean’s rankings speak to the continuing quality of a Queen’s education,” Principal Daniel Woolf told The Gazette. “Queen’s offers the definitive student experience and I am pleased to note that the university continued its strong showing in the student satisfaction ranking.”
