Queen’s defeated UOttawa on Friday to give them their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in the 2018-19 season.

Over the weekend, the men’s basketball team (11-10) beat the UOttawa Gee-Gee’s (13-8) 78-75 in overtime and fell to the Carleton Ravens (20-1) 81-61 in their final home regular season games.

On Friday, the Gaels got off to a strong start, leading the Gee-Gee’s 22-8 in the first quarter. The rest of the game was back and forth, until a 68-68 tie in the last quarter led to overtime.

The extra quarter saw the Gaels earn a three point victory over the Gee-Gee’s, finishing the upset over the nation’s sixth-ranked team.

Against nationally-ranked second Carleton on Saturday, the Gaels fell behind 18-11 by the end of the first quarter. The team struggled to keep pace as the game continued, with Carleton leading 37-25 at halftime. While there was a steady flow of runs for Queen’s—they brought themselves within nine points of tying in the third quarter—Carleton maintained their lead throughout the game.

“We tried to slow them down the best we could, but our offense lacked,” Head Coach Stephan Barrie said after the game.

The Gaels struggled to catch up the rest of the game as Carleton gained their 20th win of the season. They missed a pre-game goal to keep Carleton under 80 points by one.

According to Barrie, the Gaels need to work on consistency heading into the playoffs.

“I think [we] played hard, but we’re not where we need to be yet and we have to make sure we take the next week and a half before playoffs to get a little bit better,” Barrie added. “Even if it’s small, we need to get better.”

All eyes were on fifth-years Jaz Bains, Tanner and Jesse Graham on Saturday, as they were potentially playing in their final home game for Queen’s. The three players will be graduating this year and completing their time with the men’s basketball program.

Bains led the way with 17 points, followed by Tanner with 14 points. The two made their last home game special, leading the Gaels in points-scored that night.

Next week, the Gaels head to Toronto to play the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (7-14) and Ryerson Rams (19-2) for their last pair of regular season games. Queen’s has locked down the fifth seed in the OUA East, trailing UOttawa by four points. With Laurentian (13-8) and UOttawa battling for third in the conference, Queen’s will play one of the two teams in the first round of playoffs.
