Queen’s mask requirement to drop on June 1

In an email to students, staff, and faculty, Queen’s University announced mask requirements on campus will be suspended on Jun. 1. 

The University said the decision was made based on the “current state” of the pandemic, while looking at hospital capacity and the use of masks in most public settings. 

“Queen’s will consult with public health experts to review the need to reinstate the mask mandate, along with other preparations for the fall, in late summer,” the email said. 

In the email, the University said students, staff, and faculty should show consideration and respect for individuals who continue to wear masks on campus.

More faculty specific direction will come for students, staff, and faculty who work in specific settings such as in labs or clinics, according to the University.

In an April 14 update, Queen’s extended the end date for campus masking requirements until the end of May.  Previously, the original end of masking was stipulated to be May 1.

Queen’s originally made masking mandatory across campus on July 24, 2020, following in the footsteps of other universities, such as Brock.

The email did not discuss the role of mandatory vaccination at Queen’s.
