The perfect winter wardrobe

How to be warm, comfortable, and stylish this winter

Oversized pieces, leather staples, and Doc Martens are the way to go

As winter approaches, new fashion trends are dominating the cold season. Although it’s tempting to throw on sweatpants and a pair of Uggs when temperatures drop, there are several reasons to keep up with the seasonal evolution of fashion.

The clothes we wear every day represent our personal choices. They enable us to make connections and feel our best in the quality of the clothes we wear. Essentially, fashion is an external representation of who we are, displaying our personality and interests.

Here’s a guide to creating your perfect winter wardrobe, including all the essentials to provide both comfort and style during the upcoming months.

The oversized look is in style right now. Oversized jackets, sweaters, scarves—you name it. Puffer jackets continue to make an appearance this winter, due to their lightweight features that provide both comfort and warmth. For minimalists, a neutral colour is perfect, such as black, beige, or white. For those who want to elevate the look, patterned puffers are the way to go.

Vintage and archive fashion has been a major component of fashion this year too and will carry through to this winter season. Letterman and varsity jackets are a good investment to keep up with this trend. Double-breasted coats are also back in style—especially for men—after falling out of fashion and making several returns over the years.

Wrap coats are a major trend and a perfect item for your winter wardrobe. They can be layered with sweaters and styled in various ways. Coats that go to the knee or below in length utilize warmth while maintaining a chic and stylish look, even with a hefty sweater underneath.

Leather is also huge right now—as we’ve been seeing through fall coats and Aritzia Melina pants—and will remain in the winter season. A faux leather trench coat is stylish and provides room for layering. Leather provides the final touch to your layered outfit in the winter, pulling together your look.

Now that we’ve covered jackets and outer layering, what do we wear underneath? Firstly, triple layering is a must this winter, especially with the frigid weather we’ve already started to encounter.

This includes a shirt, sweater, and jacket. Sweater vests are back in style and can be layered with a collared blouse or sleek long-sleeve shirt underneath—two closet staples that can be paired and layered with almost everything.

Going back to vintage fashion, corset tops are also in style and can be layered with a sheer top or button-up blouse. Plaid and checkered prints are also fashionable at this time of year and can be selected when purchasing sweaters.

Turtlenecks, specifically those of cozy, knit sweaters, are a major staple and great for layering. They provide a nostalgic and comfortable look for this season’s fashion.

For bottoms, cargo pants are a widespread trend this year. They transitioned from being a tacky tourist look to a casual and relaxed approach to our modern wardrobe. It can be styled for any occasion by adding colour, a pair of heels, or even combat boots.

In another blast from the past, the wide-leg look is a must-try. You can get it in cargo pants, as well as other styles of pants, like low-waist trousers, which provide flexibility with both a casual and professional look, depending on how they’re styled.

This winter, straight-cut jeans are also in style and can be paired with anything.

To complete your look, selecting the right shoes is a must. New Balance sneakers are in style right now, offering excellent support and comfort while walking any distance. White sneakers are also in—a timeless option that will never go out of style and matches any outfit.

Loafers should also be an addition to your closet this winter. They’re a classic piece that can be bought in neutral shades and dress up any outfit. For a more chic look, loafers with sophisticated embellishments can be worn.

Lastly, black combat boots, such as Doc Martens, match anything and give your look a final kick. They’re noticeable while being a versatile staple; they can be styled with a variety of clothing pieces. Docs are no doubt a fashion staple this winter.

Whether it’s with an oversized jacket, wide-leg pants, or Doc Martens, there are many ways to elevate your wardrobe this winter while staying warm and stylish.
