Fitness and health apps

Our mobile apps are getting us places where we’re both de-stressed and in better shape. Who’s to say technology can’t improve our lives with mobile apps that can better our calorie estimates and help improve our fitness performance?

We may be nearing the end of the term, but these standout fitness and health apps will help you add a little more movement to your routine:

The 7 Minute Workout

For those with a busy schedule that barely allows for a hour at the gym, this app offers great short spurts of exercise. User-friendly audio and visual cues will guide you through seven-minute workouts of up to 12 sets. Fun achievements, from novice to athlete status, will keep you motivated and the small time commitment, just minutes a day, won’t take away from your other tasks.
Available for: iOS and Andriod

Runtastic Squats

Shaping and toning those legs and glutes is made easy and simple with Runtastic Squats. This app’s easy-to-follow audio coach guides you through each step and the accelerometer automatically counts the squats for you. Personal records and monthly training statistics also allow you to monitor your progress.

Social media sharing via Facebook, Google+, Twitter and Email also make personal improvement more motivating.

LoseIt!

LoseIt! helps users customize a weight loss plan and then track their food intake and exercise levels – not only do the analytics appear in front of you, but you can also connect with other individuals reaching similar goals.

This app also boasts a helpful food database for easy referencing for those meal decisions. Should you be reaching for one cookie or two? LoseIt! will help you manage these temptations.

SworkIt!

Circuit training has gotten a whole lot easier with this app. SworkIt let’s you choose from stretching, yoga or strength training. Clear illustrations will guide you through your own tailored-length workouts. Randomized circuits make for a good mix up and the added convenience of no equipment means you’ll never be without an excuse to get fit!
Available for: iOS and Android

RunKeeper

What’s the run without the proof? RunKeeper allows you to share your progress and achievements with your friends and sometimes that’s what it’ll take to boost your confidence and keep you going. For me this past summer, being able to say I woke up at 5 a.m. to jog with my guy friend – and actually keep up with him – was half my motivation. Social media shares, live mapping and performance analysis make this app a serious contender.

RunKeeper also monitors your pace, duration and distance – and, best of all, it’s GPS enabled so you can easily track the routes you’ve taken. Don’t let the name deceive you though – RunKeeper can also be used for mountainbiking, skiing, swimming, walking and hiking.
