Basketball reaps awards
The men’s basketball team was rewarded for their hard play this season in Thursday’s announcement of the Ontario University Athletics awards.
Forward Jon Ogden was named the OUA East Rookie of the Year, after a season in which he averaged 11 points, five rebounds and 26 minutes per game. He also had 9 blocks and 14 steals this season.
Forward Mitch Leger and guard Simon Mitchell were both named to the OUA East Second All-Star Team, while Ogden and Travis Mitchell both made the All-Rookie Team. Leger, last year’s OUA East Rookie of the Year, helped guide the Gaels to a 14-8 record this year, averaging 17 points and eight rebounds per game. He finished ninth in the league in scoring, and led Queen’s with a team-high 74.7 free-throw percentage.
Simon Mitchell averaged 12 points, five rebounds and three assists per game. He was also one of only four OUA players to average over two steals per game and put up a 2.92 assist-to-turnover ratio, fifth-best in the league and tenth-best in Canada.
Simon’s brother Travis averaged 10 points and three rebounds per game, with a team-high field goal percentage of 50. He put up stellar numbers despite an average playing time of just 21 minutes.
