Queen’s Rugby earned convincing wins on a stellar day at Nixon.

Gaels Rugby hosted a doubleheader at Nixon field on Oct. 3 for the men’s and women’s teams. The men’s side defeated the Waterloo Warriors 55-17 at 2:30 p.m. to even its record at 2-2 and strengthen its position with two regular-season games remaining before the OUA playoffs. Queen’s Women’s Rugby followed at 5 p.m. with a 121-0 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks, improving to 4-1 with one regular-season game left.

Men’s Rugby

Coming off a 33-22 loss at home to Western on Sept. 26, the matchup was important for Queen’s as they looked to stay in the playoff race.

The game remained close through the opening 25 minutes. Gabriel Ricci, HealthSci ’29, opened the scoring in the fifth minute before Waterloo answered with a converted try to take the lead.

Cameron Bubyn, CompSci ’27, scored in the 18th minute and Chase Kittleson, ArtSci ’28, added the convert to put Queen’s back in front. Waterloo tied the game again before the Gaels began to pull away.

From that point, Queen’s outscored Waterloo 43-5 to turn an even opening stretch into a 38-point win.

Trekker James, ArtSci ’27, led the Gaels with three tries. Bubyn added a second try, while Kittleson finished with 10 points on five converts.

The Gaels will travel to St. Catharines to face the Brock Badgers on Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. before closing their regular season against the Trent Excalibur at Nixon Field on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.

The OUA quarterfinals are scheduled for Oct. 24.

Women’s Rugby

Queen’s entered the game at 3-1 following a 91-5 win over McMaster at Nixon Field on Sept. 26. Laurier arrived at 2-2.

With the matchup marking Queen’s final regular season home game, the Gaels also honored their graduating players at Nixon Field before kickoff.

The Gaels scored less than two minutes into the game and continued from there, finishing with 19 tries from 13 different players in the 121-0 win.

Tatum Lougheed, Kin ’28, led all scorers with 23 points on one try and nine converts. Robyn Baker, ArtSci ’27, scored three tries while Kennedi Stevenson, ArtSci ’28, was one of four Gaels to score twice.

The result was Queen’s second straight dominant home win after its 22-19 loss to Guelph on Sept. 19. Across their wins over McMaster and Laurier, the Gaels have outscored their opponents 212-5.

Queen’s now sits at 4-1 heading into its final regular-season game against the Western Mustangs in London on Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m. The OUA playoffs begin Oct. 17, with the OUA Championship scheduled for Oct. 30.
