Spring is officially around the corner, and with the warmer weather comes a shift in fashion trends as we swap our puffy jackets and winter boots for lighter wear. After scouring social media for this year’s spring trends, I’ve compiled a list of everything you need to know to spruce up your wardrobe this season.

While a minimalist, professional look has been all the rage this winter, spring is headed for more playful outfits involving bold colours, patterns, and materials.

Palette and prints

A scan of the Instagram Explore page for #springfashion shows that the general colour palette for this spring is soft neutrals: white, beige, and pastel blue, pink, and yellow. The most popular print is floral, with a fair amount of stripes and polka dots as well.

If you’re looking for statement pieces, Elle Magazine recommends bold 1960s-inspired psychedelic patterns similar to the wallpaper of an antiquated living room. These kinds of pieces, which originated with Versace and Louis Vuitton, can likely be found easily at your local thrift store.

Dress it up

Dresses are always an integral component of spring fashion. Since layering is in style, this is a fun opportunity to bring new life to old dresses. Try layering a summery dress over a t-shirt or a long-sleeved top, or try adding a sweater or open blouse over the same dress. If the top you want to wear over the dress is bulkier, you can use a scrunchie to tie the shirt at the waist.

A similar look can be achieved with skirts. Wearing a cozy sweater over a skirt is a fun transitional look between winter and summer. Plus, skirts can be easily dressed up or down. Try a blouse on top for a more professional look (perhaps with a French tuck) or a graphic T-shirt for a relaxed, everyday outfit.

Midi-skirts are a good look for early spring when it’s still too cold to take the miniskirts out of hibernation, but you don’t want your long skirts to trail on the slushy ground.

Men-specific trends

In line with the rise in popularity of 1960s-inspired vibrant patterns, bright tropical shirts will be the new trend for men’s fashion this spring. Pinstripes, animal print, and paint splatters are other patterns that’ll be prominent in men’s fashion this season.

Pieces such as biker jackets, tank tops, and, if you’re feeling bold, leather pants will be in.  There’s also a movement toward nautical-inspired pieces such as berets and jackets with sailor-style collars. In terms of textiles, denim on denim is making a comeback, as well as satin.

Take lingerie out of the bedroom

Wearing lingerie as street clothing has been a rising trend in recent years, and this spring will be no exception: corsets, slip dresses, and bustiers will be more popular than ever according to this year’s Fashion Month. Look for these in materials such as lace, satin, and chiffon. For a unique look, try creating unconventional combinations with lingerie items, such as wearing them with a blazer or flowy pants.

Lingerie also doesn’t necessarily have to be worn on the outside to spice up your outfit.  If you’re not quite ready to leave the house in a corset or bustier, wearing a top that shows off a fun bralette underneath can be a fun way to dip your toes into the lingerie scene. For this look, search for mesh or chiffon tops.

Add a chunky finishing touch

Jewelry is an often-overlooked component of an outfit, but it can be helpful in adding an extra touch. Minimalist jewelry has been in style for a while now, but this spring’s trends are stepping toward jewelry that makes a statement instead. Coloured and chunky jewelry are making comebacks, as well as materials like beads, pearls, and oversize chains.
