Queen’s offensive lineman Josh Mosley is capping off his five-year career as a Gael by transitioning into pro football.

Mosley, who signed a contract with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL) on Feb. 16, will join the Alberta-based organization in May. He was a member of the Queen’s football team from 2016 to 2021.

“I received a call from Calgary, and I was expecting to talk about some pre-draft stuff,” Mosley told The Journal in a conversation about his recently completed OUA career and the signing. “It ended up being a contract offer to join the team in May.”

“I’m over the moon […] I just had a great support system through my teammates, my housemates, my family, and everyone. Just to sign it is really exciting and representative of my hard work but also everyone around me.”

Mosley will be leaving Queen’s having played 28 regular season games, five playoff games, and winning the Orrin Carson Award as the Gaels’ offensive lineman of the year in 2018. After finishing this season, which included a start in the 113th Yates Cup, Mosley was named a second team OUA all-star and invited to the CFL Regional Combine.

“It was a goal of mine,” Mosley said of being named an all-star.

“I knew that it was going to be my last season with Queen’s, and I had recently moved from tackle to guard so I thought I should turn it up a notch for my last season and play at my highest ability.”

From there, Mosley received an invitation to the CFL Regional Combine, his second in as many seasons after the 2020 combine was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Before he could attend, however, Mosley received a call from the Stampeders’ front office with an offer to join the team.

“That kind of diverted me off-course of training for the combine and thinking about the draft,” Mosley recalled.

Even after receiving the call, Mosley is also clear-eyed about the work that remains ahead to join the CFL.

“It’s just signing a piece of paper; I have to go out there and do the job now,” he said.

That job includes being tasked with one of the most difficult jobs in football—protecting the quarterback.

When asked to identify what he needs to do to prepare for joining the Stampeders, Mosley didn’t mince words.

“Coming into camp able to move laterally well and strong and then just adjust to the speed and get in the playbook and understand how they do things and then just be able to play fast,” he said.

“Transitioning to the speed, that’s what I hear […] the players, they move fast, they’re stronger […] They move efficiently, and they’re very technical as well.”

It will also be a homecoming of sorts, as Mosley revealed when asked his thoughts about the CFL from his earlier years.

“My first football team when I was in grade two was the Welland Stampeders so my favorite team growing up, I liked the Calgary Stampeders,” Mosley said.

“I always kind of associated myself with the Stamps because they were my first team.”

Above all, Mosley is prepared for the future with a clear goal in mind, regardless of what happens when training camp opens in May and the regular season starts in June.

“I just want to compete at my highest ability.”
