The votes are in: Team OAK has been elected the new Computing Students Association (COMPSA) executive team.

President-elect Akash Singh, CompSci ’25; Vice-President-elect (Operations) Kaan Sumer, CompSci ’26; and Vice-President-elect (Student Affairs) Owen Rocchi, CompSci ’24, will serve as executive for the 2022-23 year. They ran uncontested.

After being delayed several weeks, the election occurred on March 1 and 2.

Singh received 79 yes votes and 14 no votes, Sumer received 73 yes votes and 14 no votes, and Rocchi received 78 yes votes and 11 no votes of the total 104 ballots cast. This number represents an 8.5 per cent voter turnout.

All three members of the team have previous experience within COMPSA. In a pre-election interview with The Journal, Rocchi said they each have their “own individual platforms.”

Rocchi hopes to increase engagement and satisfaction with COMPSA events. He mentioned spreading the word through marketing and getting feedback on events from students.

Singh spoke to fighting for more funding for the School of Computer Science and working closer with the COMPSA Orientation team to streamline Orientation Week operations.

Sumer’s main goals are empowering current and future Computing students—particularly equity-seeking students—improving the “resource shortage” concerning class sizes and number of faculty members, streamlining COMPSA’s structure, and increasing engagement with COMPSA’s General Assembly.

“Our idea is we will structure things in a way that will help us help each other in our platforms,” Sumer said.
