In the shadow of a new multi-story student housing development on Princess St., a seemingly-innocuous local restaurant sprung up in the summer of 2016.  

In 1918, the Queen’s Faculty of Medicine implemented a ban on the admittance of Black students. Although some completed their education at Queen’s, a number of students at the time were forced to find new schools.

While the social climate on Queen’s campus continually evolves, the life story of Kingston’s Alfie Pierce captures a snapshot of the University’s problematic past with the Black community.

Between 1901 and 1911 was the biggest wave of immigrants in Canadian history. Among them was George Masoud.

At Queen’s, the rap and hip-hop scene has created a platform for students to discuss their university experience, specifically from the perspective of racialized students.  

Although Queen’s was one of the first schools in Canada to accept women into their medical school, they were also the first to systemically expel them. 

Last year, the Ontario Students Assistance Program (OSAP) helped 384,000 Ontario residents access their post-secondary education. But when many of these students leave school, OSAP payments will become a serious financial responsibility. 

The Alma Mater Society here at Queen’s is the oldest student association in Canada and has been the primary institution of student government at Queen’s since its founding.

If you walk past 305 Earl Street today, you would see an old, grey brick house with the occasional piece of litter on the lawn. While it’s no different from any other home you’d walk past in the University District, it’s a far cry from what it was 160 years ago.  

As 10,678 Arts and Science students begin their semester in Kingston every year, around 600 of their classmates prepare to complete an international exchange at one of Queen’s partner universities from around the globe.

Although it’s hard to believe, before 1912 Queen’s was a religious institution. 

From 1978 to 1987, Queen’s University had a problem that wouldn’t go away: $23.3 million of investments sitting in the business assets of Apartheid in South Africa in pooled investments.
