Decision on review to come this month

The Dec. 31 deadline on the University’s decision on the June 2007 Athletics Review has been delayed until the end of January, Principal Hitchcock said Wednesday.

“I want to be sure we’re able to analyze everything carefully and in order to do that I think we need to extend the deadline to the end of the month,” she said.

Hitchcock has been accepting feedback from the public since the review’s release in June.

She said she received feedback from Queen’s community members, alumni, parents of students and high school students.

“In my professional life at other institutions, athletics has always been a tremendous area of interest. People put a lot of thought and care into their responses.

“I was not surprised, frankly.”

Cheerleading ends Western’s 22-year run at the top

Western’s reign over Canadian cheerleading came to an abrupt end last month when the Queen’s competitive cheerleaders took the top spot.

Queen’s placed first at the National Cheerleading Championships held in early December at the Powerade Centre in Brampton, Ont.

Western had won every title dating back to 1985.

The competition involved two routines of two and a half minutes each.

Queen’s head coach Sandy Han said the team’s victory was monumental for cheerleading in Canada.

“It’s a very big deal in the world of cheerleading,” she said.

“I can’t think of any team who’s had a 22-year winning streak.

“Every team was just glad to see it happen, and it moved the sport forward.”

Han said the team received great support from its alumni at the event.

She also said the Gaels were expecting a better result this year, having finished second four times in a row.

“For this particular year I just noticed that we were heading in with the most amount of experience,” she said.

Seventeen universities from across the country were represented at the competition.
