Saying hello to a new era.

New Year’s is the perfect time to jot down goals, think about ways to boost your well-being, and ditch pesky bad habits. But it’s not just a personal reset, it’s a chance to predict where culture is headed: what styles we’ll embrace, which trends need to hit the road, and what we should absolutely leave behind in 2023.

So, you heard it here first, folks: Here are The Journal’s 2024 ins and outs that’ll make you question why you didn’t start—or stop—them in 2023.

IN

Overdressing

It’s high time we ditch the athleisure and minimalist aesthetic plaguing society since the dawn of the decade and enter an era that celebrates overdressing. Grab an extra accessory, throw on a jacket that adds oomph to your outfit, and own it.

If you’re worried about comfortability, don’t be. You can still be comfortable while overdressing, especially if you have confidence. Embracing a bolder and elaborate style doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort—in fact, it’s a chance to highlight your unique flair and feel at ease in your own skin. This is your chance to mix patterns while experimenting with vibrant colours and playing with proportions. Don’t be afraid to include statement pieces into your outfits.

After all, it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Saying no

If it isn’t a hell yes, it’s a no. 2023 was the year of saying yes to new people, places, and opportunities—which was great, until it wasn’t.

If you don’t want to do something, don’t. I know it can be easier said than done. Every situation is different, but if you find yourself in a position where saying “yes” feels like an obligation, it might be time to reassess. Setting boundaries is crucial to maintaining your well-being and declining without guilt is a powerful step towards self-care and growth.

In 2024, let’s value our time and energy. It’s perfectly acceptable to reserve ourselves for the things that truly align with our desires and priorities.

Sunscreen

2024 is the year we start taking care of our skin and that means wearing sunscreen. Every single day.

While the sun can feel inviting, and a sun-kissed glow is undeniably appealing, protecting your skin is non-negotiable. Regardless of the weather or season—yes, even in the winter—incorporating sunscreen into our daily routine is a commitment to long-term health.

In 2024, let’s make sun protection a daily ritual and ensure our skin remains not just a canvas for the present, but a resilient and healthy foundation for the future.

OUT

Being late

Being late is something we should all agree to leave behind in 2023.

It’s not just about punctuality; it’s a commitment to respecting not only your time but others’ time. Whether it’s being physically late or missing a deadline, chronic lateness can lead to stress, frustration, and can negatively impact personal and professional relationships.

Save yourself unnecessary stress by leaving five minutes earlier. Your future self will thank you.

Overconsuming

This is the year we stop overconsuming; this can apply to anything from having an overly complicated skincare routine, to buying too many books you won’t ever read instead of just getting a library card. Not only is it better for the environment, but your bank account will thank you.

Embracing a mindset of mindful consumption allows prioritizing quality over quantity and reducing waste, while making intentional choices about the possessions we invite into our lives. As we shift towards a more sustainable and conscious approach, we not only contribute to a healthier planet but enjoy the financial benefits of a more thoughtful and curated lifestyle.

Following strict trend-based fashion rules

Just because something is trending doesn’t mean it’s going to suit you and that’s okay. 2024 is the year we stop following the TikTok cycle’s strict trend-based fashion rules and wear whatever we want. Wear those skinny jeans if that’s what looks good on you, and makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Maybe cherry red isn’t your colour despite it being everyone’s new favourite colour to wear, and that’s perfectly fine. Fashion is about expressing your unique style, embracing what makes you feel authentic and happy.

In the coming year, let’s celebrate individuality and wear what resonates with our personal taste. It’s high time we redefine fashion rules and favour self-expression over fleeting trends.
