One of the most controversial AMS executive elections in recent memory was dealt another severe blow late Wednesday night, when the Constitutional Appeals Tribunal overturned the results of February’s vote.
Citing the numerous campaign violations committed by each team in the race, the Tribunal found all three teams competing for AMS executive “unfit to govern” under section 22b of the AMS constitution.
The winners of the election, Team TSC, have been removed from office. The current executives, Team KGJ, will be re-instated for another year.
“We are definitely going to appeal,” said Tyler Turnbull, Team TSC’s presidential candidate. “This is a clear violation of the spirit of the elections policy.”
Greg MacDonald, the Tribunal’s chair, said despite his committee’s delay in reaching a verdict, the decision was consistent with the Tribunal’s mandate.
“Our job is to ensure that democratic processes on campus are executed fairly and legitimately,” he said. “The number and spirit of the complaints received warranted a closer examination than we could carry out in 72 hours.”
Re-appointed AMS President Chrissie Knitter said her team is thrilled about the prospect of returning to office next year.
“We always knew our ideas and initiatives would have a long-term impact on the Queen’s community, but this exceeds all our expectations,” she said. “We’re looking forward to further investments in Alfie’s. We’re also already in talks with Kingston’s new mayor [Harvey Rosen] to explore the possibility of finally purchasing Ghetto houses. We expect to purchase our first house by April.”
Geoffrey Dudgeon, AMS communications officer, said he thought the Tribunal’s plan was a brilliant initiative.
“It’s totally a prank, though,” he said. “I hope none of you suckers fell for it.”
