Queen’s students can now save on Via Rail tickets—though the deal comes with some limitations.
On Oct. 6, the Instagram. Using code 820105 when booking, students can receive a 15 per cent discount on each ticket, up to a maximum of three additional tickets. The post didn’t specify whether the discount is limited to undergraduate students, though graduate students who are PSAC 901 members already have access through their union.
“Whether you’re heading home, visiting friends, or planning a short trip, this offer is made to make travel more affordable for students,” the caption read.
VIA Rail’s conditions page notes that the discount code applies to all tickets except for Escape Fare, the lowest-priced option, and Prestige Sleeper Class. The Economy Fare, the second-lowest tier after Escape Fare, typically costs about $10 more. While the two ticket types are similar, Economy Fares are partially refundable and exchangeable, whereas Escape Fares are not. For students looking for the cheapest option, the best choice often depends on fluctuating prices and demand.
With the discount applied, Economy tickets often cost less than standard Escape Fares during high-demand periods, offering greater savings despite the higher base price. Conversely, when overall ticket prices are low, Economy fares may end up slightly more expensive than Escape Fares.
The conditions also mention that students may be required to show their student ID when boarding the train.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more information.
