Phased occupancy is planned for September

The AMS’s tentative move-in date was Aug. 1.

Just days before the AMS offices and services were supposed to move into the revitalized JDUC building on Aug. 1, the timeline was delayed.

The JDUC, a centre of student life at Queen’s, will move forward with a phased occupancy plan in mid-September after experiencing “schedule slippage,” the Queen’s Gazette announced on July 23.  The delay doesn’t affect the JDUC’s new 90-room residence, which will welcome students in August.

The tentative move-in date for AMS offices and services such as the Queen’s Pub (QP), the AMS Media Centre (AMC), Common Ground Coffeehouse’s sister location, The Brew, Concurrent Education Students’ Association (CESA), and clubs, was Aug. 1, Owen Rocchi, AMS president, said during an interview with The Journal in May.

In a communication statement released on July 23, the AMS said they’re securing information about revised dates and will update students when more facts are brought to light.

Built in 1949, the JDUC is owned by Queen’s, but the AMS manages the building, except for the area that contains student residences. The building’s revitalization began to take shape in 2015 when the AMS pondered its future.

The AMS and SGPS announced a joint project with the University to revitalize the JDUC in 2018. Since then, construction has been delayed from May 2021 to May 2022, and the project exceeded its budget by $23 million, with student fees paying for the majority of the price increase.
