After police raided a house on the edge of the University District last Thursday, a youth was charged with two terrorism-related offenses.
The youth appeared in court on Friday and via video link on Monday. He received an adjournment until next week to allow his lawyer to prepare for bail proceedings.
The accused, whose identity is protected by a publication ban under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will remain in custody until his full bail hearing is scheduled.
The youth’s defense lawyer, Douglas Caldwell, declined to speak with media on Monday after proceedings were adjourned.
Police charged the youth with knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity and counselling another person to “discharge or detonate an explosive or other lethal device” in a public place with the intent to “cause death or serious bodily injury.”
A second adult was also arrested but was released without charges after 24 hours.
“This incident has, no doubt, hit close to home for many Kingston families, and people in our community will hug their loved ones a little tighter today,” Ian Arthur, Kingston & the Islands MPP, wrote in a statement last Friday.
“These charges may be a reminder of the vigilance needed to protect our safety, but I know our community will respond with kindness and support for our neighbours, and I know we will redouble our efforts to unite rather than divide,” he added.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court again on Feb. 4 via video link.
