Running in an uncontested race, Ella Doris, Sci ’28, is the sole Engineering vice-president (operations) candidate for the next school year.
Doris is currently a Mechanical Engineering student who previously worked as the Sci ’28 representative and is currently filling the role of Director of Educational Services.
The vice-president (operations) is responsible for overseeing the service-related finances and operations of the Society, along with the Directors of Retail Services, Educational Services, and Internal Processes.
In an interview with The Journal, Doris explained her campaign is based on three pillars: making EngSoc’s environment more accessible to outsiders, improving the transition between services and roles, and preserving the commitments in Engineering that students value.
On her first pillar, she explained how just joining EngSoc can present its own set of barriers. “It can be pretty daunting to get involved (EngSoc) for the first time, especially if you didn’t get involved in first year,” Doris said.
She intends to make the process of involvement more open by revamping the procedure for hiring through an overhaul of the interview process.
Doris added that she hopes to reward applicants for their understanding of roles rather than students believing they must stick to a correct “script” and maintain a rigid pre-determined template.
She explained this would help remove the “bubble” of EngSoc through a hiring process. According to Doris, this includes questions that are more like job interviews. She explained the current structure of interviews feels rigid and formulaic. Doris didn’t detail how these interviews would be altered but claimed, regarding Business Services interviews, “It feels like there are answers that are more correct than what could be seen as correct within regular EngSoc interviews.”
Being the Director of Educational Services, Doris has long-term goals for the services in EngSoc next year, including better tutor matching, lowering workshop costs, and revamping the EngSoc lounge.
Doris says maintaining access to educational services during peak study periods remains a salient issue for students, so she plans to expand opportunities for educational services and to ensure communication between those who administer these services.
“I’d really like to prioritize communication. You can’t have a team that works well with each other if you’re unable to communicate with each other effectively.”
