Club Profile: Beer Appreciation — A “Stella” Club

When students first hear about the Beer Appreciation Club, many associate it with the drunken debauchery found at a frat house, or a Friday night keg party on Aberdeen. But this impression is false, according to Heather Cameron, president of the club.

“The organization endeavours to dissuade people from purchasing team pitchers and cheap beer,” she said, which in her opinion fall short of artistry.

The organization has a serious focus on the production as well as the appreciation of quality-crafted beers. Its aim is not only to expose people to great Canadian beers, but great international beers as well.

Founded three years ago, the club has become increasingly popular with Queen’s students, annually recruiting close to 200 members. The organization hosts many events, ranging from visits to local brewing companies where representatives showcase their beers, to the Queen’s Beer Festival, which some of the best breweries in the country attend.

The Beer Appreciation Club also offers Q-College courses, where a former brew master explains the unique characteristics of a variety of beers and demonstrates their method of production. Students in the course will have the opportunity to smell, taste and comment on the wide assortment of beers presented.

A club membership costs $10, which provides the necessary capital to run the club’s events.

The club is currently looking for new members, especially female students.

The club is a good way to relax and learn about something different, Cameron said.

“You get to learn about the beers, and sample them. It’s the most fun class you’ll have all year.”
