The Common Ground has become more environmentally friendly with a new recycling program introduced by the AMS Sustainability Coordinator Blake Anderson.
The re-vamp of the Common Ground’s recycling system, which began yesterday, is a three-week pilot project that’s part of a comprehensive waste management initiative to “Stick-it-to-Garbage” in the Queen’s community.
The project will include colour-coded stickers on coffee cup sleeves and lids with coordinating colour-coded garbage bins so taking that extra step of recycling will be just as easy as throwing out the cup.
Anderson has been working on the sustainability project with Food and Safety Director John Manning, director of food and safety, as well as 12 Common Ground staff members.
Anderson said the project is part of a larger goal to improve the educational impact of sustainability opportunities at the University.
Last week Anderson presented a full proposal for this project to Dean of Student Affairs Jason Laker, dean of student affairs.
Laker said he supports the student-led initiatives.
“Any effort to incorporate sustainability into existing business is a great step forward,” he said, adding that he welcomes Anderson’s ideas for a sustainability-themed floor in residence.
Laler said this would be an interesting way to measure the benefits compared to a non-themed residence floor.
Anderson said the Queen’s Centre has been a challenge to his long-term plans to expanding sustainability projects to other areas of AMS Food Services, such as Alfies or the QP,.
“It isn’t worth it to invest in more expensive projects,” he said.
