Dean Rebecca Luce-Kapler is stepping down after completing her second term as the Dean of the Faculty of Education.

Luce-Kapler completed two, five-year terms as Dean, starting the role in July 2015. Her last day of work is June 30, 2025. She will continue her role as professor of Language and Literacy Education at the University.

“After 10 years as Dean, she is ready to step aside for new leadership,” Queen’s Faculty of Education said in a statement to The Journal. “During her time as Dean, the Faculty grew their research impact, built accessible multi-session programming, established the Chair in Student Success and Wellness, launched the Centre for Community Engagement and Social Change, and is rated the fifth-best Education program in Canada in Maclean’s 2024 rankings.”

The Faculty of Education established an advisory committee responsible for appointing the next Dean, who will begin their tenure in July 2025.

Rebecca Luce-Kapler joins the mass exodus of senior leadership at Queen’s, which has seen a significant number of deans and top administrators announce their departures or step down from their roles in the last year. Wanda Costen is departing her role as the Dean of the Smith School of Business on Dec. 31, while the former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science Barbara Crow stepped aside for the new leader, Bob Lemieux, on Aug. 1. Both Deans are ending their terms early.
